Simply Fetch the Eggs is a Twine-based narrative game, following the efforts of Gregg the orc, as he attempts to run a simple errand for his husband Tony’y while avoiding giving in to old instincts from his adventuring days.
The inspiration behind this comedic parody of fantasy tropes come partially from my experience playing Dungeons & Dragons, where I would often create characters that break from traditional genre molds to create a fresh narrative experience for myself.
I also drew a large amount of inspiration from the cozy fantasy novel Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree, which also subverts the common archetype of orcs being exclusively brutish and defined by violence.
Gameplay Flow Maps
I designed the flow of the narrative to hinge around 2 key decisions the player makes early on in the story: Whether or not to take their +10 Keen Spiked Axe of Dragonslaying on the way out of the house, and whether or not to intervene in the park scene immediately after leaving. This allowed me to split the narrative into two distinct clusters of events that could branch off freely without interfering with one another, while maintaining a high level of impact in the player’s choices. The game has a total of seven endings: 3 where the player succeeds in their errand, 2 where the player dies, and 2 where the player fails their errand.
